Time to Give Thanks!

This is one of my favorite times of the year, as it is when we reflect and express our gratitude for so very much. I am hardly deserving of most of it.

Like all of you, I won my first lottery when I was born back in 1955.

I was born with two loving parents, a mother and father, something only 65% of children aged zero to 17 can enjoy in the United States. They cared for me, taught me and held me in a secure environment throughout my early life. Thank you.

I have a loving wife, children and grandchildren, all of whom are doing well and never give me any reason for even a single restless night. Thank you.

I was born in a time and place in which I am living in relative freedom. In the vast span of the universe, I could have been born in Europe 30 years prior, or female in restrictive Afghanistan or living in some war-torn country. Instead, I live in the western New York area. Thank you.

I may live in an area rife with severe winter weather, but I am well prepared, as I have plenty of stocked food and a backup generator. I could be living in areas of the world affected by hurricanes, tornadoes and major floods, or areas where violent crime is an everyday occurrence, and where I am fearful of my family’s well-being every minute of the day. For that, thank you.

Only about 3% of the earth’s water is fresh water, and of that, only 1.2% can be used as drinking water. I happen to have not only clean, fresh water delivered to my home, but I can also have it hot and on demand. In addition, I have a well-stocked fridge and pantry to last me a long time, beating out the 828 million people, or about 10% of the world’s population, that go to bed hungry every night. Thank you.

I have nice late model cars, filled with gas and all the luxuries I can ask for. Thank you.

I live in a country where it is still relatively free to practice my own religion without the constant fear of reprisal or harassment. I have been given the knowledge of God’s greatness, His love for me and His utmost protection of me, mostly from myself. Upon reflection on this one very aspect, I am humbled that I have no right to even be alive. Thank you.

I live in a country where human rights still exist, such as freedom from employment discrimination because of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age and genetics — something we take for granted but very few countries afford their citizens. Thank you.

I was provided with opportunities unavailable to the vast majority on this planet… the ability to learn and teach stock market strategies in order to help thousands to support themselves and their families and the ability to convey my knowledge in an empathetic, effective manner. I was provided with a voice, confidence and patience to have been able to do this for many years, empowering my students to teach their children and others how to survive financially in this chaotic world. Many of my clients have furthered their illustrious trading careers to assist others throughout the world in projects such as building schools in third-world countries. Thank you.

I have more to be thankful for than space in this column permits. But most of all, I am thankful that I am not a turkey on this holiday weekend!

Happy Thanksgiving!
