The Ultimatum
When my wife, Dale Ann, brought me a coffee this morning, I wished her a happy 4,413th anniversary. That’s how many days we’ve been married. Most were very good days, many were great and a few… well, meh.
Our Trading Room partners heard this and, of course, the good-natured folks they are, proceeded to report in their “days anniversary.” Congratulations to Randall C. for 19,725 days, Jan D. for 19,710 days and Phil T. for 22,140 days. Ella B. chimed in with 12,045, Rod D. for 20,264 and Mark H. for 13,140 days, just to name a few.
I recall when my gal Dale Ann and I had dinner one night during our courting days. “So, Hugh” she said, “what are your intentions? We’ve been dating for years now and, well, where do you see us going? If you have no plans of taking this to the next step, I’m looking to get married and you can move on.”
“Okay, well, let me sleep on it,” I replied. “I’ll give you an answer in a couple days.”
I objectively figured it out. All the boxes were checked off, so sure, let’s do it. Let’s tie the knot.
Best move I ever made. We got married and started a life together as one.
You see, I needed to be pushed. I needed that ultimatum to make the decision — the wisest choice I could make. It was a life-changing moment that turned out to be for the better. Much better.
